PixelJunk Monsters Online

In between doing Unity work, personal projects and forgetting to blog, I’ve been filling a bit of my time with PixelJunk Monsters Online.

The original Monsters came out for PS3, with Monsters ‘Deluxe’ coming out for PSP a little while later. I think it’s safe to say that over the last 3 years I’ve put more time into playing Monsters than any other game.

It’s a tower defence game that succeeds because of the refinement of the core mechanics that make the genre work. It’s designed on spreadsheets and brought to life by love. It’s not about killing the monsters, but saving your tribe. It’s not just about finishing the level, but getting the rainbow. The context in which the numbers that make a tower defence game have been put is the real winner…

Now it’s a F2P Facebook game. There seems to have been a real effort into not putting game-winning content behind a pay-wall, and currently the game never punches you in the gut and tells to ‘buy or die’ (I just made that phrase up…). It’s still in beta, so give it a search on Facebook and give it a go.
